A 24-year-old computer hacker sporting an assortment of tattoos and body piercings and afflicted with Asperger Syndrome or something of the like has been under state guardianship in her native Sweden since she was thirteen. She supports herself by doing deep background investigations for Dragan Armansky, who, in turn, worries the anorexic-looking Lisbeth Salander is "the perfect victim for anyone who wished her ill." Salander may look fourteen and stubbornly shun social norms, but she possesses the inner strength of a determined survivor. She sees more than her word processor page in black and white and despises the users and abusers of this world. She won't hesitate to exact her own unique brand of retribution against small-potatoes bullies, sick predators, and corrupt magnates alike.

Financial journalist Carl Mikael Blomkvist has just been convicted of libeling a financier and is facing a fine and three months in jail. Blomkvist, after a Salander-completed background check, is summoned to a meeting with semi-retired industrialist Henrik Vanger whose far-flung but shrinking corporate empire is wholly family owned. Vanger has brooded for 36 years about the fate of his great niece, Harriet. Blomkvist is expected to live for a year on the island where many Vanger family members still reside and where Harriet was last seen. Under the cover story that he is writing a family history, Blomkvist is to investigate which family member might have done away with the teenager.

So, the stage is set. The reader easily guesses early that somehow Blomkvist and Salander will pool their talents to probe the Vanger mystery. However,Swede Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is no humdrum, formulaic whodunit. It is fascinating and very difficult to put down. Nor is it without some really suspenseful and chillingly ugly scenes....

The issue most saturating The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is that of shocking sexual violence primarily against women but not excluding men. Salander and Blomkvist both confront prima facie evidence of such crimes. Larsson's other major constituent elements are corporate malfeasance that threatens complete collapse of stock markets and anarchistic distrust of officialdom to the point of endorsing (at least, almost) vigilantism. He also deals with racism as he spins a complex web from strands of real and imagined history concerning mid-twentieth century Vanger affiliations with Sweden's fascist groups.

But Larsson's carefully calibrated tale is more than a grisly, cynical world view of his country and the modern world at large. At its core, it is an fascinating character study of a young woman who easily masters computer code but for whom human interaction is almost always more trouble than it is worth, of an investigative reporter who chooses a path of less resistance than Salander but whose humanity reaches out to many including her, and of peripheral characters -- such as Armansky -- who need more of their story told.
Fortunately, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in English translation will be followed by two more in the Millennium series: The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Air Castle that Blew Up. I can't wait. Larsson also made a 200-page start on a fourth book, but sadly he succumbed to a heart attack in 2004 and his father decided the unfinished work will remain unpublished.

I recommend this international bestseller to all who eagerly sift new books for challenging intellectual crime thrillers, who luxuriate in immersing themselves in the ambience of a compellingly created world and memorable characters, who soak up financial and investigative minutiae as well as computer hacking tidbits, and who want to share Larsson's crusade against violence and racism.

When I reached the final page I was disappointed that there was no more to read. I did not want the story to end. The characters are too intriguing for this to be the end. Apparently this was the first novel in a trilogy by the brillant writer, Stieg Larsson, who unfortunately died in 2004: the book contains a tribute to him and his career. I cannot wait to read the sequels scheduled for release in the USA in 2009.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is an international best seller and is set in Sweden. It takes a little effort to get accustomed to all the Swedish names and places but then the story moves with lightening speed. There are two key plots happening simultaneously. In one, a Swedish financial investigative journalist publishes a libelous attack about a powerful industrialist and is sentenced to jail, fined a ruinous sum, and has his career torn to shreds. Another industrialist, Vanger, hires the journalist to investigate the 36 year old disappearnace of his then 14 year old grand niece. There has been no trace of her in all these years and she is assumed dead. Yet, every year on his birthday, he receives a mysterious gift of a pressed flower, mimicking a gift his missing grandniece used to give him when she lived there. Vanger, an old man, is tormented by the flower gifts, and wants one more chance to find out what happened to her and who killed her. What the journalist uncovers about the Vanger family's hitherto unknown secrets and connections to the Nazis, will have you hanging on the edge of your seat.

The book is titled after yet another character, Lisabeth Salander, a societal outcast and social ward of the State, uncivilized without any desire to obey societal norms, and replete with piercings, tattoos, and a goth/biker appearance. In short, at first glance a totally undesirable and unsympathetic person. She is a researcher with a corporate security firm and ends up working with the journalist. In truth, she is a survivor of abuse in all forms with low self esteem, and an inablity to trust. She is a genius with Asberger's Syndrome, a form of autism, who sees patterns in things ordinary mortals miss and uses incredible computer hacking skills to accomplish her goals. She is fascinating: ruthless and tough to a fault, yet internally vulnerable, struggling to comprehend her own feelings. She has an appeal that draws you to her, rooting for her, and wanting to understand her. Lisabeth is unforgettable, unlike most characters that populate mystery thrillers.

There is such depth here.

The book is a thriller on many levels: The story about the Vanger family itself, the journalist's crusade to redeem his reputation, Lisabeth's vendettas and development, and of course, the truth about what actually happened to the missing Vanger heiresss. This is a superb novel and impossible to put down. Utterly stunning. Probably the year's best book. Henrik Vanger, an elderly Swedish industrialist, has long been receiving the same anonymous gift on his birthday: a single framed flower. He is convinced the series of flowers has something to do with his great-niece Harriet who vanished decades ago in mysterious circumstances when she was just 16.

Vanger coerces a disgraced and prison-bound journalist, Mikael Blomkvist, to do some research into the disappearance. In exchange for information on his niece, Vanger promises Blomkvist enough dirt to take down the rich man who is sending him to jail.

So begins "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," a blockbuster best-seller in Europe. As Blomkvist moves closer to the truth, he teams up with the titular character, a tattooed detective named Lisbeth Salander who's the real star of the show. Together they uncover things that stun even Blomkvist, a crusading financial reporter who thought he knew all there was to know about the rot of corruption, the myriad abuses of power and the darkest sides of ourselves.

The novel is long and sometimes feels even longer; it takes its time threading out the dense plot. There's a lot going on here. This is the kind of book that provides you with a family-tree chart upfront; by midpoint you may be wishing there were even more aids offered by the author to keep track of things.

There is a series of horrible crimes at the heart of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," but I hesitate to call this work a thriller. It's a crime novel, yes, but it has more on its mind than generic conventions. The author, the late Stieg Larsson, was a journo in the muckraking tradition, like his character Blomkvist. The book serves up a heapin' helpful of essay that tastes like story but isn't. And while the mystery element is shockingly compelling in spots, it's also surprisingly unsurprising in others.

A million Europeans can't be wrong, and I'd be dishonest to say there's nothing worthwhile about this novel that is so popular across the pond. Despite its stop-and-go pace and tortuous (and sometimes tortured) construction, there is a serious emotional undertone to the book that is undeniable.

If you're not yet bored with stories that present villains you've seen a hundred times before -- e.g., reactionaries, racists and capitalists -- you might just enjoy this. Me, I really wanted to like this book and I did, but just barely. It's a lesser "Smilla's Sense of Snow," and for many that's obviously enough.

This is my fourth HRM and by far the best. The display is big and very readable even in dim light without using the indiglo. My last two HRMs were the older model Timex Ironman 100 lappers. They became very unreliable even with new batteries. I used to have to use electrode gel just to get them to work at all. This HRM gives me an accurate reading immediately and continues to do so as my heart rate changes during my workout. It works great even without electrode gel. It doesn't have any fancy features but I don't need them. It does record your time in the zone that you can set and you average and peak heart rates. It also has a recovery time feature that measures how many BPM your HR drops in one minute. The sensor belt will also work with the HR display most treadmills and other indoor machines. This HRM has already improved my training significantly because it is so accurate and responsive. I highly recommend it.

I was looking for a heartrate monitor to track not only my aerobics workouts but also my weight training workouts. I wanted a wireless monitor with a large enough display so it was easy to read (yes, I've joined the reading glasses population). I needed to be able to replace the batteries myself, and it would be nice if it could tell time in case I wanted to use it as a watch.

The Timex met all my needs and at a very good price. I was a bit concerned because I have a 54" chest and a fairly large wrist. I was also concerned because the packaging is not specific about whether it has a coded signal so that it does not pick up other heartrate monitor signals. The chest strap fits me well but if my chest gets too much larger, it's going to be a bit snug. The wrist band also fits but it's in the last hole, and so far, I haven't picked up anyone else's monitor or bled over onto anyone else's cardio machines.

I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

With so many heart monitors available, I had some difficulty deciding on what to buy. I decided on the Timex T5G971 because I have always wore the Timex Iron Man. I have come to know Timex as a dependable and affordable sport time piece, and so far I am very happy with the heart monitor. It was easy to set up and works great! I have also read that other brands require that you send off to the company for replacement batteries, but such is not the case with the Timex.

These are really great shoes. My daughter loves them. The shipping is fast. I wish there were more colors available. Especially pink. But everywhere I go pink seems to always be sold out. If ordered through our store in town it takes a couple of weeks. I don't think the imitation crocs are as good as these the original crocs. It is worth the money to buy the originals.

We purchased the Toddler/Little Kid Cayman as a replacement for my son's first pair, which he wore EVERY day for TWO years, winter and summer until his toes were beginning to poke holes out the front. The shoes are durable and versatile. They don't stink, can trek through puddles, and actually come off the playground without a load of sand(somehow the sand slips out and doesn't get trapped). They are also easy for a 3-year-old to put on all by himself. The only problem I've had with Crocs is that the tread is shallow and wears off over time, giving the shoes less traction than a sneaker.

I find this perfume to be quite interesting and like nothing else I own. I usually wear Noa (cacharel), Une Fleur (chanel), or Pure Grace (philosophy), so I normally like a light floral scent. I was really excited about trying this when it came out, but the first time I smelled this from the bottle, it did not appeal to me, which was a surprise after hearing Oprah rave about it. The second time I thought what the heck and put some on in the store. I found that this perfume develops into quite a "lovely" and sensual fragrance once it has time to interact with your body chemistry. What counts is that my husband likes it on me, just to note: he did not like it when he smelled it straight from the bottle either. This perfume lasts a long time, which is not a surprise since it is eau de parfum. If you are thinking about it, try it out and see how it smells on you because that is what really counts.

I've worn primarily green/citrus scents for years--Hugo Boss Woman, Happy to Be--and was very happy with them. I smelled this first on a scent strip and was intrigued; it had the crispness I like in the greener scents, but also a softness I've missed in my scents, an unexpected light musk richness. I have weird chemistry & most scents are dicey on me, so I tried this half a dozen times before purchasing, and every time I tried it, I found something new to love. I'm 30--well beyond wishing to smell 'cute'--and this fragrance is exactly what I'm growing into, a scent for a sophisticated woman. It's not old, it's not young; it's mature, and equally appropriate with a sweater and jeans or evening wear. The only scent I bother with anymore. I've had great success with the life of the scent--I put it on at 8am and my husband can still smell it on me at bedtime--but I prefer that it be subtle enough that only a person standing next to me smell it; perhaps some who find it short-lived prefer a bolder scent.

I'm thrilled with Lovely. I don't expect to change perfumes again for years.

I saw on Oprah the intro of LOVELY with Sarah J. Parker. I ordered and was not disappointed. It's very feminine. It's a light scent, but it does leave one wanting another whiff. The bottle is a little tricky to hold but it's a beautiful bottle. I have worn BEAUTIFUL only by Estee Lauder for years, but am now alternating between LOVELY and BEAUTIFUL. I don't think one would be disappointed.

I don't usually go gung-ho over fragrances--I've owned a few over the years that I liked and found attractive in fragrance, but when I first smelled Euphoria in a magazine ad I was hooked. The scent is warm,woody,full and sweet with a light oriental touch. And what's best is that Euphoria smells creamy, as though once you spray it on your skin it seeps into your skin as though it were a lotion. If there is one fragrance that is a Must-Have for 2005, Calvin Klein's Euphoria is it.

I really like this perfume. It is not heavy, but quite light, playful and cinamony sweet. It is very refreshing, and stays on very niceley. When it wears out a bit after some time, it smells super nice. I recommend it because its a flirty scent, and good for any occasion. Love it. 5 stars.

This is definitely one of my favorite fragrances of all time. It's a beautiful combination of allure and femininity, but without the sometimes overpowering florals that are out in the market. The woodsy floral is just the thing I run to when I want to feel a little special, but not overtly sexy. I usually separate my perfumes into "day" and "night" perfumes, but this is one that I can wear any time without feeling like I'm going to cause my classmates to faint from the smell. My fragrance wardrobe inclues: Dior Pure Poison, Dior J'dore, Chanel Chance, Alfred Sung Shi, Escada Island Paradise, and Estee Lauder Pleasures.

Recommended by the "So You'd like to start wearing cologne" guide on amazon (of which I bought and reviewed them all) this cologne is another almost perfect male fragrance. The term that comes to mind in this case is "EQ". It just has a perfect range of scents that are very well balanced between bass, mids, and high notes. It is not too citrusy like many other colognes that I happen to like, it is more serious and definitively male. Comparatively it is a more serious version of TOMMY, more sex-scent oriented than HUGO, and has a broad spicy mid-range. Being that it doesn't have an over-amount of top notes that never make it to your skin, this cologne is dependable to smell like it did when you put it on hours later.

This is just an awesome smelling cologne. The biggest problem is it is also the most popular. Every guy has it. So if you want to smell like every other guy go ahead and get it. If you want a unique scent that you want women to only think of you when they smell it, get something else. I remember when I wore it I couldn't help but think of other guys I had smelt it on. No something I like to be doing. Its popularity is the only reason preventing it from getting a full five stars.

I ordered Acqua Di Gio By Giorgio Armani For Men (Eau De Toilette Spray 3.4 Ounces) via Amazon on November 23, 2008, and the seller is: Designer Shop.

This was the first time I purchased perfume from Amazon. I didn't know that even if the order is placed through Amazon, ordered item will come from different sellers. So, new buyers, keep an eye on WHO IS THE SELLER, take a look on the seller's review and make sure the seller is reliable before you place the order.
I had an unpleasant experience with Designer Shop. I didn't get my item during the estimated day: Nov 28 - Dec 3. It was 7 days late. That's still OK to me, as long as it arrives before Xmas as a gift to my husband.
HOWEVER, the item I got was not the one I expected. My husband has been using Armani Acqua Di Gio for more than 3 years, and he's very familar with the scent. The Acqua Di Gio from Designer Shop doesn't smell as same as the one he used to use. Moreover, the one from Designer Shop has strong alcohol smell, but the scent last very short.(I usually buy the perfume from mall. My friend told me there's an 50% off perfume deal on Amazon, then I took a risk this time).

I left a negative feedback to the Designer Shop, and I got the email from them the next day saying they would refund me. BUT, 14 days after their reply, I still NOT get the refund yet! I already email them back today, request them to refund me within 5 business days. If still no refund, I will file A-TO-Z complain.
I had to go to the mall to buy a bottle of REAL Acqua Di Gio the day after Xmas as a late gift for my husband.
I would not purchase any perfume from Amazon, at least NO from the Designer Shop. It's not worthwhile to get so many trouble and a fake stuff for 50% off price.

Cool Water is a great smelling cologne. I used to be an Eternity man and once wore it on a first date. When I went on a spur of the moment second date with the same person I borrowed a friends bottle of Cool Water for a quick spray. A few days later when I was talking to the girl on the phone I happened to mention the need to purchase some more Eternity. She quickly informed me that whatever it was that I was wearing on our second date smelled great on me and to stick to it. Needless to say I stuck to the Coolwater and I ended up marrying that girl.Now,I wont promise you that you'll get a wife out of it, but you'll always smell great and usually have great results!

To those who aren't comfortable receiving the box unsealed, just so you know, the box originally comes that way, even when you buy it from a retail store. One way to tell if someone may have tampered with the bottle is to smell the sprayer. If the product is new, and never been sprayed before, you shouldn't be able to smell anything from the opening of the sprayer.
